Sports fans, have you ever wondered about the history of alternate logos used by teams in the Horizon League conference? If so, then this blog post is for you!
The Horizon League was founded in 1979 and comprises ten member schools throughout the Midwest. While most sports teams feature a primary logo that remains unchanged over time, many also employ an alternate logo to represent their team or school. The Horizons League is no exception; its members have employed several different logos over the years as they sought to create a unique identity for themselves within college athletics.
To begin with, let’s take a look at Wright State University's Raider mascot, which has been around since 1988 and still serves as one of its main symbols today. In 2009, Wright State unveiled an updated version featuring more modernized features such as sharper lines and bolder colors - perfect for representing athletic prowess and academic excellence on campus!
Another example comes from Cleveland State University, which debuted its Viking mascot in 2002 when it first appeared on uniforms during basketball games against rival universities like Kent State or Akron. Since then, CSU has gone through several iterations, including two versions featuring wings instead of horns (which were meant to symbolize strength) before settling on its current design, which includes elements from Norse mythology such as Thor’s hammer Mjölnir alongside traditional Viking imagery like swords & shields - all designed specifically with student-athletes competing at CSU in mind!
Finally, we come full circle back home here at our own Valparaiso University, where Crusader Pete has served faithfully since 1997 when he made his debut appearance during men's basketball games wearing blue & white armor complete with a sword drawn ready for battle (or victory). Over time, Pete received minor updates but nothing too drastic until 2016 when VU decided it was finally time to give him some much-needed makeover, resulting in what we see today: A refreshed version keeping the true spirit alive while giving him a more contemporary feel befitting 21st-century university life!
